The Bourbon Journal introduces bourbon production, terminology, proof, aging, filtration and other topics that help readers understand whiskey specifications.
Proof and ABV
Alcohol by volume, or ABV, states what percentage of a beverage’s volume is alcohol. In the United States, proof is twice the ABV: a whiskey at 50% ABV is 100 proof.
Proof describes alcoholic strength. It does not by itself determine flavor, age or quality, and proof can vary between releases.
