Overview
The Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection Seasoned Oak Bourbon is a distinctive expression that highlights the impact of specialized wood finishing. This 7-year-old bourbon was first matured in new, charred oak barrels, a standard practice for Kentucky straight bourbon. Following this initial aging, it received an additional 8 months of finishing in seasoned oak.
Aging and Finishing Process
This bourbon’s unique character comes from its finishing in seasoned oak. The staves used for these finishing barrels were air-dried for an extended period, ranging from three to five years, a process designed to enhance specific wood characteristics before charring. This secondary maturation contributes to a complex profile, intertwining the bourbon’s inherent sweetness with pronounced wood spice.
Tasting Profile
On the nose, the aromas of this Woodford Reserve bourbon present a harmonious blend of its sweet and spicy elements. The palate initially reveals sweeter notes, including caramel, nutty toffee, fig, ripe berries, and black cherry. These are gradually complemented by a building presence of drier, spicier notes such as cinnamon, clove, cocoa powder, vanilla, polished leather, and maduro tobacco, leading to a firmly dry finish.
